Teak is the premium natural material for outdoor furniture — an exceptionally durable hardwood that needs very little care to preserve its good looks and integrity over decades of use. It requires no special treatment or coating to extend its life, though there are some choices available if you'd like to influence its appearance as it ages.
New teak furniture often has a slight surface sheen from the wood's natural oils. Left outdoors, teak will gradually age to a handsome silver-grey — usually over six to twelve months, depending on local conditions such as humidity and sun exposure. You may notice water spots or minor discolouration during this early weathering process, along with small surface cracks; these are a natural part of weathering, will blend into the surrounding surface over time, and have no effect on the strength or longevity of your furniture. Teak typically returns to its original smooth feel once this initial weathering process is complete.
If you'd prefer to maintain teak's original golden-honey colour rather than let it grey naturally, commercial teak oils, stains, and protectors such as Teakshield are available and easy to apply. Keep in mind that oiling changes the wood's natural breathing and moisture behaviour — an oiled or sealed finish will need to be reapplied periodically to maintain the look, and some teak specialists advise that unsealed, natural teak is lower-maintenance over the piece's lifetime. Either approach is a valid choice — it comes down to the finish you prefer.
Teak contains a high level of natural oils, which is part of what gives it such lasting durability outdoors. Over time, these oils can migrate to the surface of the timber — this is a normal, recurring characteristic of solid teak, not a fault.
Mould and mildew growth is a natural result of excess moisture, and outdoor teak furniture may experience it over its lifetime — particularly in damp or high-humidity environments where the timber doesn't get a chance to fully dry out. To remove it:
If mould doesn't lift with normal cleaning, light sanding may be needed — though this can remove any colour stain in that area, so treat it as a last resort.
Every piece of teak has its own character. You may notice small fissures opening in the end grain over time — known as "checking." This is a normal response to changing environmental conditions, particularly in larger or heavier components, and doesn't affect the structure or functionality of your furniture.
We recommend leaving your teak furniture uncovered where possible, as covers can restrict airflow and trap moisture against the timber, which may encourage mould growth. If you do choose to use a protective cover, always follow the cover manufacturer's instructions for proper use. If storing furniture for an extended period, clean it thoroughly, let it dry completely, and store in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
Following the care steps above helps keep your Satara furniture covered under our warranty terms.
