Satara's outdoor cushions and upholstery use a combination of Sunbrella and our Factory Solution-Dyed (Sunproof) acrylic fabrics, both built to handle the Australian outdoors. The general care routine below applies to both, with dedicated notes for each fabric type further down.
Australian summer sun is harsh, and UV rays will affect the colour of fabric over time (as well as timber and leather). Where possible, limit how much direct sun your cushions get. Darker fabrics tend to fade faster than lighter ones — moving and rotating your cushions periodically helps ensure any fading happens evenly across the whole piece rather than in patches.
Our standard foam (medium and high-density polyurethane) is best suited to covered outdoor areas, where cushions might get some side-spray from rain but won't sit in direct rain. If a cushion does get wet, tilt it up on its side to help it dry. If the inner foam becomes fully soaked, remove the cover and let the foam dry out before putting the cover back on.
If you'd like to leave cushions outdoors in the rain, we recommend our QuickDryFoam® inserts, used across our outdoor range. QuickDryFoam® is exceptionally porous and permeable, allowing maximum water drainage and airflow so it can be used again quickly even after being fully saturated. It also uses UREGARD, a built-in anti-microbial protection that helps prevent common mould and fungus growth even with extended outdoor use.
Machine wash in cold water on a mild cycle (under 38°C). Depending on your wash load size, use a normal amount of mild laundry soap plus around 1 cup of bleach. Allow the fabric to air dry — do not machine dry or tumble dry.
Mildew can grow on dirt and other residue left on the fabric, so regular cleaning is the best prevention. For stubborn stains or mildew:
Outdoor fabrics have a special finish that enhances water repellence. This finish is designed to last several years under normal use, but may need refreshing after a thorough clean or extended use.
Sunbrella is a leading outdoor performance fabric made from 100% solution-dyed acrylic — UV-stabilised and fade-resistant for long-lasting colour, and breathable, water-repellent, and mould-resistant for easy care.
Sunproof® is an internationally recognised outdoor fabric technology made from premium Olefin fibres, dyed to the core for reliability, strength, and colour-fastness. It's also Oeko-Tex certified against harmful substances.
For general cleaning:
Avoid letting water sit or stand on the surface of Sunproof upholstery for extended periods. For further detail, see the full Sunproof® care instructions.
Coastal or seaside environments can accelerate salt build-up and general wear on outdoor fabrics, so furniture in these locations may need more frequent cleaning. If your outdoor furniture is heavily soiled or stained, professional upholstery cleaning is worth considering — professional cleaners have the equipment to restore fabric without risking damage.
If storing furniture for an extended period or over winter, clean it thoroughly first and let it dry completely before storing in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight. Avoid storing in humid or high-moisture environments.
Following the care steps above helps keep your Satara furniture covered under our warranty terms.
