  • Outdoor Fabric Care Instructions

Outdoor Fabric Care Instructions

Outdoor Fabric Care Instructions

Satara's outdoor cushions and upholstery use a combination of Sunbrella and our Factory Solution-Dyed (Sunproof) acrylic fabrics, both built to handle the Australian outdoors. The general care routine below applies to both, with dedicated notes for each fabric type further down.

At a Glance: Do's and Don'ts

Do

  • Brush off loose dirt regularly, or vacuum with an upholstery attachment, before it becomes embedded in the fabric
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean cloth
  • Spot clean stains as soon as they occur
  • Limit direct sunlight where possible, and rotate cushions so wear and fading are even
  • Allow fabric and foam to air dry completely before reassembling covers

Don't

  • Machine dry or tumble dry your fabric covers — this can shrink the stitching
  • Dry clean, iron, or steam clean outdoor fabric covers
  • Let water sit on the surface of your cushions for extended periods
  • Use undiluted bleach or harsh chemicals without following the specific dilution guidance below

Everyday Care

  • Brush off loose dirt regularly, or vacuum with a soft upholstery attachment, before it has a chance to become embedded in the fabric.
  • Wipe up spills as soon as they happen, and spot clean stains promptly — the sooner you address a mark, the easier it lifts.
  • Properly maintaining your fabric this way is the best way to keep it looking good and delay the need for a deeper, more vigorous clean.

Protecting Against Sun Fading

Australian summer sun is harsh, and UV rays will affect the colour of fabric over time (as well as timber and leather). Where possible, limit how much direct sun your cushions get. Darker fabrics tend to fade faster than lighter ones — moving and rotating your cushions periodically helps ensure any fading happens evenly across the whole piece rather than in patches.

About Our Foam Inserts

Our standard foam (medium and high-density polyurethane) is best suited to covered outdoor areas, where cushions might get some side-spray from rain but won't sit in direct rain. If a cushion does get wet, tilt it up on its side to help it dry. If the inner foam becomes fully soaked, remove the cover and let the foam dry out before putting the cover back on.

If you'd like to leave cushions outdoors in the rain, we recommend our QuickDryFoam® inserts, used across our outdoor range. QuickDryFoam® is exceptionally porous and permeable, allowing maximum water drainage and airflow so it can be used again quickly even after being fully saturated. It also uses UREGARD, a built-in anti-microbial protection that helps prevent common mould and fungus growth even with extended outdoor use.

General / Light Cleaning

  1. Brush off any loose dirt.
  2. Prepare a cleaning solution of ¼ cup mild soap per 4 litres of lukewarm water (under 38°C).
  3. Use a sponge or soft-bristled brush to clean, letting the solution soak into the fabric.
  4. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  5. Allow the fabric to air dry completely.

Spot Cleaning

  1. Apply a light mist of mild soap and water using a spray bottle.
  2. Work the solution into the stain by lightly scrubbing with a sponge or soft-bristled brush.
  3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  4. Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge, or wet-vacuum if available.
  5. Air dry, repeating steps 2–4 until all soap residue is gone.

Hand Washing (Removable Covers)

  1. Soak the fabric in a solution of ¼ cup mild soap per 4 litres of lukewarm water.
  2. Use a sponge or soft-bristled brush as needed.
  3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  4. Air dry completely.

Machine Washing (Removable Covers)

Machine wash in cold water on a mild cycle (under 38°C). Depending on your wash load size, use a normal amount of mild laundry soap plus around 1 cup of bleach. Allow the fabric to air dry — do not machine dry or tumble dry.

Heavy Cleaning for Stubborn Stains and Mildew

Mildew can grow on dirt and other residue left on the fabric, so regular cleaning is the best prevention. For stubborn stains or mildew:

  1. Prepare a solution of 1 cup bleach and ¼ cup mild soap per 4 litres of clean water.
  2. Spray over the entire affected area and let it soak into the fabric for 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the stain with a sponge, clean towel, or very soft-bristled brush.
  4. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  5. Allow the fabric to air dry completely.
  6. For severe stains or mildew, the bleach quantity can be increased.

Re-treating the Fabric

Outdoor fabrics have a special finish that enhances water repellence. This finish is designed to last several years under normal use, but may need refreshing after a thorough clean or extended use.

Sunbrella Fabric

Sunbrella is a leading outdoor performance fabric made from 100% solution-dyed acrylic — UV-stabilised and fade-resistant for long-lasting colour, and breathable, water-repellent, and mould-resistant for easy care.

  • Follow the general cleaning steps above for everyday care and spills.
  • Do not machine dry or tumble dry Sunbrella fabric, as this can shrink the stitching.
  • Do not dry clean, iron, or steam clean Sunbrella fabric.
  • Sunbrella cushions include "breathers" underneath — a small rubber-like mesh that allows ventilation and helps both the fabric and foam insert dry faster.
  • Sunbrella also publishes a comprehensive stain removal guide and full care instructions for specific stain types.

Sunproof Fabric

Sunproof® is an internationally recognised outdoor fabric technology made from premium Olefin fibres, dyed to the core for reliability, strength, and colour-fastness. It's also Oeko-Tex certified against harmful substances.

For general cleaning:

  1. Remove the foam insert from the Sunproof cover.
  2. Remove any loose dirt, then spray a cleaning solution of water and mild soap onto the cover.
  3. Let the solution soak into the fabric, then gently clean the surface with a soft-bristled brush.
  4. Rinse the cover thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
  5. Allow the cover to air-dry completely before reinstalling the foam insert.

Avoid letting water sit or stand on the surface of Sunproof upholstery for extended periods. For further detail, see the full Sunproof® care instructions.

Coastal Environments and Storage

Coastal or seaside environments can accelerate salt build-up and general wear on outdoor fabrics, so furniture in these locations may need more frequent cleaning. If your outdoor furniture is heavily soiled or stained, professional upholstery cleaning is worth considering — professional cleaners have the equipment to restore fabric without risking damage.

If storing furniture for an extended period or over winter, clean it thoroughly first and let it dry completely before storing in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight. Avoid storing in humid or high-moisture environments.

Warranty and Further Help

Following the care steps above helps keep your Satara furniture covered under our warranty terms. If you're ever unsure which care routine applies to your piece, or have a specific stain or mark you'd like advice on, our team is happy to help — email sales@satara.com.au or call your nearest showroom.
