Twenty-two years ago, we found ourselves backpacking through Kruger National Park in South Africa. This was a time before our three children were born, before our business was formed and at a moment in our lives where travel and absorbing culture was at the forefront of our minds. We travelled to the third-largest rest-camp in the national park, Satara. The camp is reminiscent of colonial times, with thatched rondavels and cottages. It’s an incredibly special place. As well as falling in love with the place and its abundance of wildlife, we were drawn to the name of the camp and made note of it, originally thinking it would be a beautiful name for a daughter.
Moving forward several years, the business was born and while we had had children, the name Satara was still unused, sitting in the “will be of use later” part of our minds. The word for us is synonymous with travel, worldliness and a sense of wanderlust, the same light in which we see our business. The name Satara was finally given a home.
Satara, for us, is an excellent fit. It reflects our passion for adventure, our love of authentic, earthy interiors and our respect for craftsmanship. We can’t imagine our company under any other name.Travel will always be a big part of our lives and we love nothing more than discovering and experiencing something new. Travel challenges us, inspires our business and keeps our minds open. The destination wish list constantly evolves, and with each new location visited, our eyes are opened to new aesthetics, materials and crafts which inform our growing product range.
