Bathroom Styling- More Than Tiles & Towels

Bathroom styling is probably not something you give much thought to. Certainly bathroom design- clever use of space, gorgeous finishes and luxurious fittings- but styling seems to be reserved for other areas of the home. This simply doesn’t have to be the case, in fact, clever bathroom styling can be practical as well as beautiful too. Here are some tips for bringing life into one of the smallest but most important rooms in your house.

Stools & Benches

If the space allows, why not incorporate a beautiful stool or bench? Placed next to a bath they become a handy surface for a book, candle or cup of tea (or wine!). They’re also useful to sit on occasionally too. Often bathrooms are all cool, hard surfaces, so timber furniture pieces can really add warmth and character to this little room. This does not mean of course that you’re limited to timber. Bone inlay, stone and metals also can work, just ensure the material will not be compromised with damp air or splashes of water.

Baskets

Including another material or texture by way of a woven basket in the bathroom is another lovely option. Small baskets can be used as a little bin, while larger, lidded designs used for towels or as a dirty clothes basket (much nicer than plastic!) or even to house toilet rolls. This is something that may come down to space again as it’s important not to clutter this area of the home.

Mirrors & Art

If you’re renovating or building, think outside the square with your mirror. While it needs to be a practical size and height for everyday use, there are so many stunning options to explore other than a piece of frame less mirror mounted to the tiles. Powder rooms are generally not used to apply makeup or as frequently as in the main bathroom so it’s an excellent opportunity to include a round mirror or unusual design.

Worn timber, character-filled metals and other materials can provide the contrast to tiles and stone bench tops which is much needed. There’s also nothing to say you can’t include artwork in this space, provided there’s a free wall! What a gorgeous way to introduce some character, just make sure that the temperature and moisture will not damage your artwork.

Vases & Trays

Styling the vanity top is a great way to inject some personality into a bathroom, particularly if you’re renting or unable to create the bathroom of your dreams. Woven trays, timber, mirrored, stone or lacquer designs are handy surfaces to display beautiful candles, small posies, perfumes and other items. While it may be practical to have other every-day items quickly on hand, try to only display things which look nice as well- hide the deodorant can in the drawer for example!

If you’re able to, a vase of fresh flowers on the vanity is such a luxurious and special addition. It may not be every week, but flowers create an ambience which is hard to replicate. They don’t have to be expensive, in fact, little bunches of neighbourhood green foliage can look effective too. If you’re having people over, this is a great time to pop a bunch into the bathroom they will use, it suggests you took the time to make the room special for them.

Towels

Having beautiful and quality towels are a pleasure to look at as well as use. You really do get what you pay for with towels and it’s a worthwhile investment. Having a few sets of bath sheets or towels in a timeless design can be made interesting with contrasting floor mats and hand towels. If you’re unsure what colour to go with, try to work with your tiles or vanity tops. Grey tiles benefit from fresh white towels and punchy citrus colours or teals and greens as a highlight. Bone or off-white tiles can be a little trickier, but white often works again. In terms of colour, try warmer blue tones to add interest.

Plants

Many plants thrive in bathrooms, loving the moisture in the air, they also look good too! Plants in the bathroom can range from small hanging plants in an unused corner through to potted plants on the vanity or floor of larger spaces. Depending on light and temperature, peace lily, orchids and ferns are just some options. Keep an eye on them, you may have to move them around or monitor how much water they need in this unique area of the house.

While the plant is the main attraction here, make sure to plant it in a nicely designed pot to finish the look. There are so many beautiful styles, from brass and copper through to woven, ceramic and timber designs.

While talking all things natural, consider temporary natural décor items too, such as a collection of seed pods, river pebbles, coral or shells. These all make interesting and inexpensive decorator pieces.

Finishing Touches

The small details are really important for a luxurious bathroom and while it may seem excessive, quality products on show are a pleasure to use and look at. If the budget is tight, keep an eye out for designer soaps or moisturisers in lovely packaging. The same goes for candles, a quality candle is an expense but adds to the overall look at feel of a bathroom while obviously bringing a glorious smell to the space. Being so small, candles here can last a very long time as they don’t need to be lit for very long to be effective.

There are also many well-considered bathroom accessories such as soap dispensers, dishes, toothbrush holders, containers for cotton buds, toilet roll holders and tissue boxes. It’s all in the detail here and so worth splurging on something you will have for many years to come.

Bailey Chair in the Top 5

Satara Sales - Tuesday, June 02, 2015

With the introduction of so many new dining chairs earlier this year, when designers visit our showroom it's hard to answer which one is the most popular.

But with out question the Bailey Chair is in the Top 5. This great chair, as seen in the below image, works well with so many dining tables and interior schemes, it's difficult to walk past - pardon the pun!

In terms of functionality and comfort it's all thumbs up.  The robust frame and hardy synthetic fabric are attractive to anyone who priorities longevity and the design appeals to any one with an eye for design.

Available in this darker charcoal color it is also available in a lighter grey - both perfect for the Scandi color palette that's so popular at the moment.

Shown here with our Nordic Buffet, Timber vessels and W Dining Table.

Go Wild with Satara's Tribal Timber accessories this season

Colleen Johnston - Thursday, August 21, 2014

Tribal influences are still big this season, think African landscape inspired shapes, wild creatures, dark timbers, raw finishes and washed out neutral colors.

Satara's collection of Indoor Furniture and Tribal and Tulip timber vases, canisters and accessories are an easy way to add a Tribal feel to homes without investing too heavily on larger more expensive items.  Large timber canisters, in both natural and yellow tops are inspired by the elegant silohuette of giraffes and tribal black vases certainly have a 'gourd' inspired look. Branch stools and Leather chairs have a distinctive safari camp feel. Teamed with tribal inspired soft furnishings, Satara's Furniture and Tribal and Tulip accessories instantly add to the tribal look.  Our pieces are certainly far more conveniently accessed via our on line web store then haggling for them at customs after an expensive African safari!
